There are several ways to finish your hem, but in order to achieve a quality finish I believe that your hem stitch should be invisible, not just from the outside of the garment, but also inside. You probably guessed it already – that will involve some hand sewing. It might be more time consuming, but in the end it is all worth it!

I prefer to use a herringbone stitch for hand sewing my hems. It is secure and also has some movement in it.

STEP 1:

• overlock or zigzag stitch the hem edge
• turn up and press the hem edge

STEP 2:

• roll back the edge of the hem

STEP 3:

• work from your right to your left
• take a small stitch (catch just one fabric thread to keep it from being seen on the right side of the garment) into one layer and then into the other layer, so that the thread is crossing itself
• keep the spacing and stitch length consistent
• a sample herringbone stitch line added for clearer visibility
